Stroke prevention: Steps to take

by admin

You can be at increased risk for stroke based on your age and family history. However, certain health conditions may also increase this risk.

This article will provide you with information on lifestyle changes and treatments to reduce your stroke risk.

Control your high blood-pressureHigh blood pressure that is not controlled can double or quadruple stroke risk in men and women. High blood pressure contributes to stroke. The most important thing that you can do is to manage your blood pressure.

Maintaining a healthy body weight
Obesity and its associated health problems (like high blood pressure or diabetes) increase stroke risks. Even losing a few pounds can help reduce your stroke risk.

Get more exercise
Exercise can help you reduce your blood pressure and lose weight. Even if you’re not overweight or have high blood-pressure, it is vital to your health that you stay active.

Drink moderately
One alcoholic beverage per day can reduce your stroke risk. If you drink more than two drinks a day, your stroke risk will increase. A drink is defined as 5 ounces wine, 12 ounces beer or 1.5 ounces hard liquor. Avoid alcohol or limit your intake to one drink per day. Red wine, which contains resveratrol and can protect the heart and brain, is a good option for those who drink.

Treat atrial fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation can cause irregular heartbeats and blood clots. These blood clots may travel to the brain and cause strokes. Atrial fibrillation is said to increase stroke risk five-fold.

Manage diabetes
Blood clots are more likely to form if blood sugar levels are not controlled. Blood clots can travel to the brain, just like heart blood clots.

Stop smoking
Smoking accelerates blood clots by thickening the blood and increasing plaque buildup within your arteries. Quitting smoking, along with other lifestyle changes like eating a healthy food and exercising regularly, will reduce your stroke risk.

Reduce your stroke risk by adopting a healthier lifestyle and treating conditions which increase your stroke risk.
